Notes from the underground: Subterranean sites lure travelers (from USA Today)

Some of the best travel destinations are literally just below our feet, says David Farley, author of Underground Worlds: A Guide to Spectacular Subterranean Places (Black Dog & Leventhal, $27.99). The new book, to be released May 15, includes dozens of buried marvels from bunkers to mines to hotels. “Every one of these are kind of a wonder in a way. They were either formed by nature or man, and they’re incredible.” He shares some favorites with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.  Click the link for the entire article and slide show!

Ronan Farrow’s CATCH AND KILL to be Published by Little, Brown and Company

New York, NY — May 11, 2018

Reagan Arthur, publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today the acquisition of Ronan Farrow’s new investigative book Catch and Kill, which will continue his award-winning reporting on sexual misconduct and the machine deployed by powerful men to silence survivors of abuse and threaten reporters chasing those survivors’ stories. With original reporting and stunning revelations,Catch and Kill will tell in full, for the first time, the hidden story of how far private investigators, former spies, high-priced lawyers, and embattled executives went to terrorize, intimidate and silence the women whose stories helped launch an international conversation on sexual misconduct and the abuse of power. Little, Brown acquired World English rights from agent Lynn Nesbit of Janklow & Nesbit, and the book will be edited by Executive Editor Vanessa Mobley.

Publisher Reagan Arthur says, “Ronan Farrow’s wrenching investigative journalism has given voice to sexual abuse survivors and shaken the conscience of our culture. But, despite the enormity of the conversation his reporting helped ignite, some of the most astonishing disclosures about what he uncovered are still to come. We’re very proud to be publishing this important book.”

Catch and Kill comes after Farrow’s year-long investigation into Harvey Weinstein, which resulted in the publication of the first allegations of rape and sexual assault against the Hollywood producer in The New Yorker, as well as Farrow’s subsequent exposés about Weinstein’s attorneys, private investigators, and co-conspirators in the media. Those explosive stories exposed “long-suppressed allegations of coercion, brutality and victim silencing and helped spur a worldwide reckoning about sexual abuse of women,” and were awarded the Pulitzer Prize gold medal for Public Service—the first ever awarded to a magazine—the George Polk Award for National Reporting, and the National Magazine Award for Public Interest. Farrow has since continued his groundbreaking investigative reporting on other prominent figures accused of abuse, including President Donald Trump and the former Attorney General of New York, Eric Schneiderman, who resigned hours after Farrow and Jane Mayer reported on allegations of misconduct against him.

Catch and Kill is both a deeply personal story about a reporter grappling with how much to put on the line to protect the truth, and a story that expands our understanding of the forces in law, politics, and media that maintained a conspiracy of silence around Weinstein and other men in power committing gross abuses with impunity. It documents dramatic acts of courage and sacrifice—and of betrayal and cowardice—from law enforcement agencies to newsrooms. It pulls back the curtain on a world of threats, shadowy sources, and undercover operatives drawn from elite, international intelligence agencies. And it exposes new twists that connect several of the most significant stories of the past year, offering one of the essential records of the #MeToo movement.

Ronan Farrow says, “It’s been important to me to keep the spotlight focused on the survivors of sexual violence who risked so much to speak to me and other reporters whose work I admire. I’ve also always said that the questions about the behind-the-scenes mechanics that suppressed these revelations are legitimate—and that, when enough time had passed, and once I had marshalled the evidence needed to tell this story, I would find a way to do so. Catch and Kill is that story.”

Ronan Farrow is a contributing writer at The New Yorker and a television anchor and investigative reporter who is currently producing his investigative work for HBO. He was named to Time magazine’s 2018 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. His previous book is the New York Times bestseller War on Peace: The End of Diplomacy and the Decline of American Influence.

New to Elin Hilderbrand Novels? Start Here.

Rule #1: Schedule some time

I have no way of knowing which of Elin’s titles you’ll pick first, but I do know that you won’t be able to put it down. Elin’s stories are fast-paced and her writing style is light and addictive. You may want to apologize in advance to your loved ones who will just have to understand your temporary absence.

Rule #2: Fiction will feel real

While the book covers might look like just another light, fluffy beach read, and many of her characters are rich and famous, her writing style is quick and witty and her characters are relatable, with real-world problems and flaws. More importantly, Elin’s plots tend to be peppered with relevant contemporary issues: cancer diagnosis, pharmaceutical addiction, white collar crimes, etc.

Rule #3: Elin will not be pigeonholed

Unimaginative people sometimes refer to Elin as a women’s fiction writer. But after reading any one of her books, you will understand that she is a fiction writer. No gender qualifier needed, thank you very much. Both men and women will appreciate her novels. In fact, her novels are often told from the point of view of a male character. Take that, sexism!

Rule #4: Wine it up

Every Elin book is a love letter to wine, so make sure to pair each read with a character’s choice of vino. (Psst: I made this easy for you, check out the suggestions below.) Not a wine lover? A cool glass of lemonade or a warm mug of hot chocolate (depending on the season) are also good pairing options.
